Europe's New Requirement for American Travelers
This advisory is intended to provide clarity on the implementation timelines and functionalities of two European border control systems impacting travellers: the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and the Entry/Exit System (EES).
Phased Implementation
Previously planned for a simultaneous launch in 2024, the ETIAS and EES systems will now be introduced in phases:
- Entry/Exit System (EES): Effective October 6, 2024, the EES is operational at border crossings in participating European countries. EES collects travellers' biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans) upon entry and exit to track stays and identify potential overstays.
- European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS): The launch of ETIAS is anticipated for mid-2025. Travellers are advised to monitor the official ETIAS website ([etias website]([placeholder for ETIAS website])) for confirmation.
ETIAS Details
Once operational, ETIAS will be a mandatory travel authorization requirement for visa-exempt visitors from specific countries planning short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) in the Schengen Area and certain other European countries. The application process is expected to be conducted online for a minimal fee. Travellers exempt from obtaining ETIAS authorization will be clearly outlined on the official website.
Travellers planning European visits in mid-2025 onwards are strongly encouraged to monitor the ETIAS website for application details and confirmation of their authorization requirements. Familiarise yourself with EES procedures, as these are already in effect at European borders.
By staying informed about these upcoming changes, you can ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience to Europe.
