New Entry Tax Hits 10 European Destinations in 2024

We have compiled a comprehensive list of European destinations set to implement or modify entry fees for tourists in 2024. This includes locations such as Santiago de Compostela and Figueira da Foz, with Paris and Amsterdam, also adjusting their tourist taxes for the upcoming year. Notably, the United Kingdom is introducing a new €7 fee for visitor applications.
Paris, France
Commencing January 2024, tourists visiting the French capital will encounter an almost 200% increase in the tourist tax for accommodations. This decision, approved by policymakers, means that visitors can anticipate a nightly fee of over €11 for a double room in a highly-rated hotel.
Amsterdam, Netherlands

In 2024, Amsterdam is poised to boast the highest tourist tax in Europe, set at 12.5% of the hotel room price. This applies to both cruise passengers and overnight visitors. To address over tourism, the tax for cruise-ship passengers will rise from €8 to €11 per visitor, a daily charge introduced due to the city's expectation of hosting over 20 million tourists in 2023.
Venice, Italy

Starting in 2024, Venice will implement a daily fee for visitors, with a pilot program launching during the upcoming spring and summer weekends. Despite delays in the testing phase, the tourist tax aims to support city residents through maintenance, cleaning efforts, and reduced living expenses.
Valencia, Spain

In early 2024, Valencia plans to introduce a tourist tax for various accommodations, ranging from €0.50 to €2 per night. The proceeds will be dedicated to developing sustainable tourism and providing more affordable housing for Valencia residents.
Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is set to raise tourist taxes, with an increase from €3.25 to €3.2 per visitor in official tourist accommodations. The funds generated will contribute to the city's road improvements, bus services, and escalators.
Madrid, Spain

While not confirmed, Madrid is considering a new tourist tax in 2024 to address over-tourism, particularly given the city's high annual visitor numbers.
Olhao and Faro, Portugal

Olhao will apply a €2 charge for visitors staying between April and October, reduced to €1 for those visiting between November and March. Faro imposes a €1.50 fee during the summer season for a maximum of seven nights, excluding children under 12.
Figueira da Foz, Portugal

This Portuguese city will implement a municipal tourist tax, with fees ranging from €1.50 to €2 per night, depending on the season and the number of nights spent. Certain groups, including children under 16, disabled individuals, students, and those staying due to natural disasters, are exempt.
UK

Starting in 2024, the UK will implement the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), requiring visitors from the US, Australia, Canada, and Europe to apply for permission. Traveling without an ETA may result in fines.
In Europe, many countries already have tourist taxes integrated into accommodation charges. For example, Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, charge around €3.2, while Brussels, Belgium, varies depending on the hotel. Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Switzerland also have varying tourist taxes based on location, ratings, or room types. These measures aim to manage tourism impact and contribute to local development.
